2002 - 2008 Z4 (E85, E86) In 2002 the Z4 replaced the Z3. Meaner, edgier, and no longer a car born of spare parts, the Z4 took to the challenge of replacing the popular Z3 seriously. The shark like design, multi link rear suspension, and improved power makes the Z4 the new roadster to beat. In 2006 a coupe design was also introduced.

Mike, The radiator fan is controlled by a theromstat which detects the coolant temperature and as it rises above a pre set limit the fan will cut in to reduce the temperature. Sounds like either the thermostat is defective or the temperature sensor. Diagnostic check should identify the fault code.

Location: Delphi, IN You've found the right place for finding solutions to Z4 Whilst the earlier pre-face-lift Z4 Roadster used the 231hp M54 from the late Z3 and the E46 330i range, the all-new N52 has that nice wodge of extra grunt and ‘zing’. Unencumbered by the later direct injection setup and its injector noise and carbon build-up problems, the N52 3.0-litre is probably the zenith of BMW straight-sixes.
I had already followed the one for the FSU replacement wi h was alot tougher. It turned out it wasn't the issue. I replaced it anyway. My brother found a used unit in California for 50 dollars and I got it overnight. It only took a half hour to. Upton thing back up. Thanks alot. 2004 BMW Z4 E85 2.5i automatic climate control. No heated seats.
On the later Z4's BMW opened the tolerance on the main gear and changed the type of grease used. Looking at it all recently BMW did release an update on how to adjust the engagement of the motor gear onto the column. This will solve both issues with sticking and loose/wandering steering. by cusword » Tue Jan 12, 2016 6:49 pm. I had this problem on an 05 3 litre auto. Fault codes reported a fault with the switch on the side of the gearbox that logs the position of the selector lever. You don't have to have the fault light showing to read fault codes. A new switch and no problems for six months.
FWIW my BMW Independent doesn't recommend less than 6 cylinders in a BMW! So if you are looking at an E85 between 2003 and 2005 the sixes all use the M54 engine in different sizes - 2.2i, 2.5i and 3.0i which seems to be well regarded for reliability.
BMW Z4 misfire problem. by Ivo » Mon Oct 31, 2016 12:08 am. Hi, I am recently a new owner of a 2004 BMW Z4. Have had problems with the engine light coming on & the EML light. Also the engine misfires. Send it to the local dealer, they replaced one coil. When they returned the car after a day I had the same failure again.
Any problems are really fair game on 10+ year old N54’s with 100,000+ miles. We wrote an in-depth post about The 8 Most Common N54 Engine Problems. The list below includes more common problems with a bit less analysis on each. What Are the Most Common BMW N54 Engine Problems? N54 Oil Leaks: Valve cover and/or gasket (VC/VCG)
The BMW Z4 2-door convertible comes with several common issues that interested buyers should know about before investing in this excellent car. Some of them include electrical problems, engine misfiring, oil leaks, faulty coolant, clunking steering wheel, defective convertible top, and defective door handles. It's of special interest to note that on July 5th 2006 BMW implemented two production changes 1. a new machining process that produces a smoother surface of the worm gear & 2. a new lubrication for the worm gear. BMW also made a change in mid June 2005, but that did not "fix" the entire problem. What is highly irratating is that BMW has known

7.a engine stalling when RPM is low. b. resolved by getting RPM higher. c.warranty. 8. a.front driver side shock absorber blown. b. unsoved. 9. a. rear link arm was bent and soem sensor bracket was broken without any sign of a damage. ( I am not sure about the names of the parts.

The symptons you describe are overheating and it sounds like you got it hot enough to boil the coolant and cause pockets of air (air locks). These cars (SI) suffer from faulty water pump at 70k miles, which are electric and expensive. As above, sounds like erratic water pump. One of the 2 fuel senders on my 03 Z4 has been bad for about a year now. I have never gotten round to changing it due to how ridiculously expensive the quote was, caused by the fact that you have to buy the whole fuel pump/sender unit as a combined item and then have the tank dropped to change it. The Problem E85/E86 BMW Z4 faces a huge steering-related problem in its lineup from 2003-2009 that has not been addressed or resolved by BMW yet. So, for the ones looking forward to buying this car, and want an opinion on how bad this problem is, simply do not buy this model. So the issue is
BMW Z4 Power steering column – Common problem. This electric power steering column is a very common failure for the BMW Z4 built between 2003 and 2009. When the steering column motor fails then the steering will become very heavy and the power steering light will illuminate on the instrument cluster. If you attempt to diagnose the steering

The dealer refused to pay saying that I had apparently left the top down in the rain - and I had. Cost me $1114, half of which was a new control unit and the rest was
