As Digital Camera World points out, not only were scenes shot using the Canon 5D Mark III, but an adapted Nikon 28mm lens was used and the camera operator was John Knoll, the brother of Photoshop creator Thomas Knoll, and current effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM).
This hack comes hot on the heels of the Magic Lantern team coaxing the Canon 5D Mark II / III into capturing 24 fps RAW video. With the firmware add-on installed, the 50D is capable of shooting
But can also be used without MLV_Lite or MLV_rec module for standard Canon h.264 compression. crop_rec on steroids: 3K, 4K, 1080p48, full-resolution LiveView = This is an add-on module for MLV_Lite(or old MLV_rec.module), to give more options.
Lack of 4K shooting mode is one of the features that Canon EOS 6D Mark II users are disappointed about. Magic Lantern has been considering the device for the development of their add-on the firmware. That should ideally be good news for the 6D Mark II users out there. The fact that Magic Lantern has already added the 4K on the sibling Canon 5D
Magic Lantern is a firmware add-on written for the Canon 5D Mark II by Trammell Hudson in 2009, and ported to the 550D/T2i/Kiss X4 (1.0.8) in July 2010 by the same author. Starting September 2010, A1ex from CHDK forum and other people ported this add-on to the 550D/T2i (1.0.9), 60D, 500D/T1i/Kiss X3, 600D/T3i/Kiss X5 (1.0.1) and 50D; It also
NEW Workflow MLV to Resolve video:
I've been experimenting with Magic Lantern Raw video files on my Canon 5D mark ii. Right now I'm not seeing a big advantage to the Raw files.
- the 5d mark iii (for full frame, good pictures, raw video. Even tho is a bit old) - the 6d (for full frame, good pictures, raw video in 10 bit) - the 6d mark ii (for autofocus, good pictures, full frame and digic 7. I hope that ml will unlock this so maybe it could be a beast in fullframe raw video)
Once you have the correct Canon firmware: Format the card from the camera. Unzip the archive and copy ML files to the memory card. Run the Firmware Update process from Canon menu. This procedure will enable the BOOTDISK flag in your camera's Flash ROM, allowing it to load and execute custom code from the memory card.

Re: 5D Mark iii in crop mode with external monitor. Yeah I'm having the same issue, I can get normal preview on a phone-usb-camera with mlv1080 mode but not 5.5k anamorphic. Both modes in canon menu give a distorted view. It's usable for focusing, but proper preview would be amazing.
Ricky's answer is technically correct. However: 1. you have two camera bodies worth about $1000 between them on the used purchase market (should you damage them). 2. A compatible CF card is less than $100. 3. Unlike SD and CFe cards, the CF card uses a pin and socket design.

The 5D gives you that big sensor and dramatic filmic look, but you need to get more accessories to make it really shootable for moving images. That being said, try them both. Bring a CF card to a camera store and demo them. Look at the results and decide. Warren Eig. O 310-470-0905.

Magic Lantern delivered the proof of concept that it is possible to get 4K video on an EOS 5D Mark III. However, as cool as it is (it is), it’s a proof of concept, not even a working alpha version. There are many issues to solve before you can get working 4K on the EOS 5D Mark III.

Whether one still needs Magic Lantern is a personal decision. I sold my 7D that I was using Magic Lantern with when I bought the 7D Mark II with the primary hope that low light images would be better.
